Out and about

Our village of Ceaux-en-Couhé is set in the heart of tranquil French countryside, in a small typically-French village.  You may wish to do nothing more than sunbathe by our pool or read in the garden, but if you wish to soak up French life, here are some of the things you will find.

Our own quiet village has a sports stadium where you can play tennis, volleyball or football, there are several areas for playing ‘boules’ or ‘petanque’ and there’s a children’s play park.

You can browse round local villages with their markets, fêtes, churches and architectural treasures, and enjoy watching the world go by over a glass of something in a pavement-side café.  Local produce includes cheeses, fruit and wine, and you can buy ostrich steaks, rabbit and pigeons to eat from local farms as well as the more usual meats and poultry.

The area is ideal for rural activities such as walking, cycling and horse-riding, and within easy reach is the River Vienne for water activities. There are lots of signposted walks, and the gently rolling countryside makes for easy cycling.

The local area has chateaux, churches, abbeys and other historical buildings to visit.  “Monkey Valley”(La Vallée des Singes) will appeal to animal-lovers of all ages and the “Vieux Cormenier” Museum offers insight into life on a French farm in ages gone by.

For sport aviation and trial flights there is the local aerodrome and you can even fly light aircraft at the international airport at Poitiers.

The historic town of Poitiers offers many attractions, including good shops in the city centre, many beautiful buildings, theatres and museums and notably the theme park ‘The Futuroscope’.

Cognac is worth exploring . The coast and its towns and beaches are about an hour and a half away.

In our local town of Couhé, 4  kilometres away, the markets take place in their renowned medieval covered market “les Halles”, next to the chateau. The nearest tourist office is there.  You will find also find 2 supermarkets, boulangeries, pharmacies, post office, dentist, hairdressers, garage and bar/restaurant amongst other small traditional enterprises.  There is a Catholic church and a Protestant temple.

The motto of our department La Vienne is that we have everything to seduce you.
